Where does your helmet end up?

The most expensive thing you wear usually ends up on the floor. This is not about tidiness.

Where does your helmet end up?

You take off your helmet and put it wherever there’s space. On the seat, on a worktop next to an oil can, on the floor by the wheel. A week later there’s a scratch on the shell, and dust inside working its way into the lining every time you put it on.

Your helmet costs more than most things in that garage, and it’s the only one standing between your head and the tarmac. Yet we treat it like a cap.

The problem isn’t the clutter

A garage shelf always loses to whatever else is on it. Boxes, paint, a fuel can, cartons from that part that arrived six months ago. Once a helmet is wedged in among them, it disappears — and what you can’t see stops mattering.

That’s why a helmet tower isn’t a cabinet. It’s a display. Five levels, one helmet on each, nothing else. You can’t shove a box in there, because there’s nowhere for it to go.

Forty by forty

The column takes up no more floor space than a stool. It fits by a pillar, in a corner, between the garage door and the wall — the sort of spots no wardrobe can use because it needs room for doors to open.

The black anodised finish does the rest. The frame disappears against a dark wall, leaving only the helmet, set at eye level. You walk into the garage and the first thing you see is your kit — not the unit it sits on.
